All That is Gold Does Not Glitter

JRR Tolkien

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

Fire and Ice

Robert Frost

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Warning

Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

One Inch Tall

Shel Silverstein

If you were only one inch tall, you'd ride a worm to school.
The teardrop of a crying ant would be your swimming pool.
A crumb of cake would be a feast
And last you seven days at least,
A flea would be a frightening beast
If you were one inch tall.

If you were only one inch tall, you'd walk beneath the door,
And it would take about a month to get down to the store.
A bit of fluff would be your bed,
You'd swing upon a spider's thread,
And wear a thimble on your head
If you were one inch tall.

You'd surf across the kitchen sink upon a stick of gum.
You couldn't hug your mama, you'd just have to hug her thumb.
You'd run from people's feet in fright,
To move a pen would take all night,
(This poem took fourteen years to write--
'Cause I'm just one inch tall).

Television

Roald Dahl

The most important thing we've learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is never, NEVER, NEVER let
Them near your television set --
Or better still, just don't install
The idiotic thing at all.
In almost every house we've been,
We've watched them gaping at the screen.
They loll and slop and lounge about,
And stare until their eyes pop out.
(Last week in someone's place we saw
A dozen eyeballs on the floor.)
They sit and stare and stare and sit
Until they're hypnotised by it,
Until they're absolutely drunk
With all that shocking ghastly junk.
Oh yes, we know it keeps them still,
They don't climb out the window sill,
They never fight or kick or punch,
They leave you free to cook the lunch
And wash the dishes in the sink --
But did you ever stop to think,
To wonder just exactly what
This does to your beloved tot?
IT ROTS THE SENSE IN THE HEAD!
IT KILLS IMAGINATION DEAD!
IT CLOGS AND CLUTTERS UP THE MIND!
IT MAKES A CHILD SO DULL AND BLIND
HE CAN NO LONGER UNDERSTAND
A FANTASY, A FAIRYLAND!
HIS BRAIN BECOMES AS SOFT AS CHEESE!
HIS POWERS OF THINKING RUST AND FREEZE!
HE CANNOT THINK -- HE ONLY SEES!
'All right!' you'll cry. 'All right!' you'll say,
'But if we take the set away,
What shall we do to entertain
Our darling children? Please explain!'
We'll answer this by asking you,
'What used the darling ones to do?
'How used they keep themselves contented
Before this monster was invented?'
Have you forgotten? Don't you know?
We'll say it very loud and slow:
THEY ... USED ... TO ... READ! They'd READ and READ,
AND READ and READ, and then proceed
To READ some more. Great Scott! Gadzooks!
One half their lives was reading books!
The nursery shelves held books galore!
Books cluttered up the nursery floor!
And in the bedroom, by the bed,
More books were waiting to be read!
Such wondrous, fine, fantastic tales
Of dragons, gypsies, queens, and whales
And treasure isles, and distant shores
Where smugglers rowed with muffled oars,
And pirates wearing purple pants,
And sailing ships and elephants,
And cannibals crouching 'round the pot,
Stirring away at something hot.
(It smells so good, what can it be?
Good gracious, it's Penelope.)
The younger ones had Beatrix Potter
With Mr. Tod, the dirty rotter,
And Squirrel Nutkin, Pigling Bland,
And Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and-
Just How The Camel Got His Hump,
And How the Monkey Lost His Rump,
And Mr. Toad, and bless my soul,
There's Mr. Rate and Mr. Mole-
Oh, books, what books they used to know,
Those children living long ago!
So please, oh please, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in its place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall.
Then fill the shelves with lots of books,
Ignoring all the dirty looks,
The screams and yells, the bites and kicks,
And children hitting you with sticks-
Fear not, because we promise you
That, in about a week or two
Of having nothing else to do,
They'll now begin to feel the need
Of having something to read.
And once they start -- oh boy, oh boy!
You watch the slowly growing joy
That fills their hearts. They'll grow so keen
They'll wonder what they'd ever seen
In that ridiculous machine,
That nauseating, foul, unclean,
Repulsive television screen!
And later, each and every kid
Will love you more for what you did.

I Crave Your Mouth, Your Voice, Your Hair

DON'T GO FAR OFF, NOT EVEN FOR A DAY
Don't go far off, not even for a day, because --
because -- I don't know how to say it: a day is long
and I will be waiting for you, as in an empty station
when the trains are parked off somewhere else, asleep.
Pablo Neruda
Don't leave me, even for an hour, because
then the little drops of anguish will all run together,
the smoke that roams looking for a home will drift
into me, choking my lost heart.

Oh, may your silhouette never dissolve on the beach;
may your eyelids never flutter into the empty distance.
Don't leave me for a second, my dearest,

because in that moment you'll have gone so far
I'll wander mazily over all the earth, asking,
Will you come back? Will you leave me here, dying?

I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You

Pablo Neruda

I do not love you except because I love you;
I go from loving to not loving you,
From waiting to not waiting for you
My heart moves from cold to fire.

I love you only because it's you the one I love;
I hate you deeply, and hating you
Bend to you, and the measure of my changing love for you
Is that I do not see you but love you blindly.

Maybe January light will consume
My heart with its cruel
Ray, stealing my key to true calm.

In this part of the story I am the one who
Dies, the only one, and I will die of love because I love you,
Because I love you, Love, in fire and blood.

I Once Dreamt...I Once Thought...

Oneida Valdez
I once dreamt of a future filled with memories of him and me.
I once thought that he pictured memories being filled too.
I once dreamt of life being filled with love.
I once thought that he dreamt the same.
I once dreamt of him and me saying I do.
I once thought that day would come soon.
I once dreamt of growing old with him.
I once thought that he daydreamed about me.
I once dreamt that he would be the father of my children.
I once thought that he wanted me to be his future too.
I once dreamt of him and me spending the rest of our days together.
I once thought that he loved me back the way I always loved him.

Stab Vengeance With Love

Vimal Kumar N

My verdict of vengeance,
toothache of a venomous snake,
the questions of the mindless thought
where is the winner of all wars fought?
vampires blood thirst
till the very last,
cynical delusions apart,
abdicate the illusional idiosyncrasy,
wars just an idiocy,
abducting someone's love,
do they abbreviate your expanding pain?
do they stop your tempestuous tear rain?
Are you a Revulsive animal soaking loathsome?
do repulsive heart makes you look handsome?
Regrade your regret of being lonesome.
Reprimand the war with a reproach,
with two hands wide open let love be always what we approach!

A Picture Of Spring

Cherry Berry
A melody of colors
Paints a vibrant scene
Laid upon a canvas of,
Blue, red, yellow and green

Rain showers our planet
Reviving an ancient life
Having slept for a season
And awakening its wild life

Fields of many flowers
Take over the land
Creatures play and romp
In the thick of the woodland

Nectar’s fragrance compels
Bees boldly buzz about
Song birds play musical melodies
Praising springs eternal route

A masterpiece is forming
From our creator’s hand
Giving to us beauty
That will grow and expand

The Storm

Charlie Vergara

The ocean moves
as if to say
I'm taking revenge
here, today

The wind id blowing
out of control
spinning papers
around a pole

The lightning strikes
on the horizon
creating sparks
with no compassion

The sky is dark
filled with clouds
the rain is falling
the thunder is loud

The rivers swell
filled with pride
changing landscapes
on every side

The streets are empty
yet, filled with sound
from the elements of nature
all around

The beaches are corroded
by the rising tide
what lays under water
is shoved aside

I stand by the boardwalk
a man reborn
accesing the damage
left by the storm.

Why Do I Wait Often Wait For You

Afzal Hussain

I don't know

What keeps me waiting

And

Why do I often wait for you

Another life 'My old friends'

Kevin Fix

If it's true, and there's another life
That waits beyond our journey's end
I'll hold a place within my heart
And a rocking chair for my old friends
To sit beside a fire at night
And talk about, the stories of another time
Or dream about what might have been,
But either way I wouldn't change
The path that led to my old friends

And if there is another life
I'll wait for you with open arms
Beneath the moonlit sky at night
I'll reminisce and count the stars
Which never fails to take my breath
Each moment when I think of you
And know again I'll see your face
That shines within the summer sun
Or glows within the winter moon

That's seen so many journeys end
With hopes of such a special place
Where friends are never left behind
And faces never fade away
Through time, if there's another life
Old friends would come
And there they'll stay
And bring another rocking chair
For those who pass this way

Trains

Charlie Vergara

 East side, West side
out of the blue
Uptown, Downtown
to accomodate you

Elevated tracks
and on the ground
the trains ballance on them
with a trembling sound

Plenty of seats
with a textured face
plenty of riders
decreasing space

They stop at a station
and open their doors
to exchange the people
on the platform floors

Another run completed
on powered metal lanes
by motorman with pride
driving our trains.

Adorable darling

vijay menon

the day i started to adore you
my mind is conditioned
just to accept your thoughts
its now a hub of things
appertaining to you

your effervescent smile
and exuberant looks
i just can erase it off
from my mind

sometime i feel i have lost myself
thinking of you all the time

and if some day i go astray
your presence will pull me back
and make me mend my ways
and be strong and loyal

befitting to be know more
as your boyfriend

OH PLEASE!

Dónall Dempsey

'All I vwant is...everything! '
he laughed.

'Is that too much
to ask! '
